WHAT IS GUIDED READING? Guided reading is an instructional approach that involves a teacher working with a student oor a small group of students who can all read similar levels of texts. Why is guided reading important? Guided reading gives students the chance to apply the strategies they already know to new text. The ultimate goal is independent reading where students will be reading to learn, on their own, instead of learning to read. When are children ready for guided reading? Students in Grades 2 to 12 can participate in the program. Each student will be palces at a different reading level based on testing. Time can be set aside at the end of the lesson if there are questions in other subjects, however the goal of guided reading is to become a fluent reader in the English Language.
