Effective educational leadership makes the most significant difference in improving learning and successful student outcomes. This may be direct or indirect leadership and be exercised in a number of ways. Ideally, school leaders are ‘instructional’ leaders while those that effect significant and sustained change can be referred to as ‘transformational’. There are virtually no documented examples of schools facing challenge being turned around without the intervention of a powerful, strategic leader. Principals cannot do the whole leadership task by themselves. Leaders are needed at all levels in a school even though accountability remains at the top level.
Participants will:
This course is the nexus of a suite of ‘Leadership’ courses; it may be taken as a stand-alone course or be combined with one or more from the suite.
Schools need people to work together efficiently and effectively to realise continuous improvement. Teams enable smoother movement towards targets, prolong forward momentum, and can help the organization to overcome obstacles. The benefits to be gained from teamwork synergies are essential for effective management. This course provides opportunities for blended learning with in-school projects, personal and group mentoring, on-line learning links and face-to-face sessions.
Participants will:
This course is part of a suite of ‘Leadership’ courses; it may be taken as a stand-alone course or be combined with one or more from the suite to obtain either a Bronze, Silver or Gold level Leadership Award.
Communication is a two-way process involving an exchange of ideas and the hallmark of effective communication is the coherent verbal projection of those ideas. This course examines how successful school leaders encourage meaningful dialogue around student achievement and high expectation for all.
Participants will:
This course is part of a suite of Leadership courses; it may be taken as a stand-alone course or be combined with one or more from the suite to obtain either a Bronze, Silver or Gold level Leadership Award (see the Leadership Suite page for details).
This course will provide delegates with insights into assessment and the tools to critically examine practice in their own schools. Results from schools prove that effective assessment and instruction make the greatest difference to school improvement. There is a wealth of research on which instructional strategies make the biggest difference in student achievement. It is so tempting to choose assessment methods that are “easy to grade,” but best practice tells us that we should choose those methods that best enable us to see if students have a deep understanding of the essential questions.
Meanwhile, data from assessment can be a powerful tool to raise individual student achievement, individual teacher, whole department and whole school performance. However, teachers need support to improve assessment and differentiated instructional practices based on analysis of assessment data. As the key role of a school leader is to be an instructional leader, this support must come from within.
Participants will:
This course is part of a suite of Leadership courses; it may be taken as a stand-alone course or be combined with one or more from the suite to obtain either a Bronze, Silver or Gold level Leadership Award. Please see the Leadership Suite page for details.
Effective learning to include relevant, accessible, successful learning may require re-aligning the curriculum. Changing curriculum and setting higher expectations is all well and good, but it will only lead to frustration unless ways are found to help students meet these expectations. This means identifying strategies to help students with a wide range of styles, difficulties, interests and strengths. “Personalization” is structuring experiences and building relationships that make learning meaningful to a given student.
Participants will:

There are many different types of professional development experiences, but most have exposure to just a few. Most define professional development as traditional training workshops, though many other strategies should be part of the professional development system. A top-notch school-wide professional development plan is created by a collaborative team effort. It is realistic, school-wide, clear, detailed and tied to the school’s aims and student achievement goals.
This course will provide delegates with the tools to design a varied, contextualized continuing professional development program that will have the greatest impact on student achievement in their school.
Participants will:
Effective allocation of time and resources is the key to realizing improvements in student achievement. How effectively do school leaders use time? How much time falls into the ‘value-added’ category and how much is wasted? How often is the physical environment and staffing assessed to ensure the best possible allocation, or does historical inertia act as a limiting factor so ‘This is the way it has always been’ is never challenged? These all will be answered as you pursue the program.

Programme content :
School principals, or any other leader for that matter, do not single-handedly lead schools to greatness; leadership involves an array of individuals with various tools and structures. This workshop examines how the responsibilities and duties necessary to manage a school well can be shared using the strengths and abilities of the senior team.
Course contents:
Many schools use baseline assessment to establish student performance and measure progress over time. But how can such data be used to create specific, measurable student targets that underpin student performance on a daily basis? Managing the relationship between challenge and achievability for the individual student demands a high degree of skill and professional expertise on the part of the tutor.
Workshop contents:
Positive Behaviour Management is an interactive workshop designed to apprise teachers of strategies to win over even the most recalcitrant student and create a classroom climate conducive for all learners.
The program contents:
As said by Lockwood & McLean, if assessment is to be a positive force in education, it must be implemented properly. It cannot be used to merely sort students or to criticise. Its goals must be to improve education. This workshop examines reliable, easily planned alternatives to the culture of ‘test, test, test’ without creating more work.
Program contents :
This workshop is aimed at all staff who work with children in schools. The session aims to enhance awareness of the reasons why safeguarding should underpin every aspect of a school’s work. We can offer on-site induction or refresher training for whole staff sessions, discrete groups including those with pastoral responsibility, newly qualified teachers, senior staff and those who run extra-curricular activities. As per Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan's words, on land and in the sea, our fore-fathers lived and survived in this environment. They were able to do so because they recognised the need to conserve it, to take from it only what they needed to live, and to preserve it for succeeding generations.
This workshop aims to bring the wealth of resource that is the UAE environment into the classroom in all disciplines. The contents for this workshop are as listed below:
The purpose of display in the classroom is not just to make the room look attractive, though even this will have a positive impact. The best classrooms use display to immerse learners in a world of interesting facts and ideas, promote language and subject-specific vocabulary, model excellent work produced by students and communicate information and teaching points.
Program contents :
In the absence of a carefully structured system of appraisal, people tend to judge the work performance of others, including subordinates, naturally, informally and arbitrarily. But this can create serious motivational, ethical and legal problems in the workplace. Without a structured appraisal system, there is little chance of ensuring that the judgments made will be lawful, fair, defensible and accurate. This workshop examines a school’s particular context and assists Senior managers in setting up a realistic, easily manageable performance management system.
Workshop contents :
The expectations of senior leaders means they need to manage their time very efficiently and balance the demands of a wide range of stakeholders. This workshop looks at strategies for responding to the daily demands of the senior leader role. This course can be extended to include a session for Heads of Department/Faculty, Curriculum Coordinators and Heads of Year on managing the role efficiently.

The program content is listed below:

Schools will then be able to tailor their course slightly according to their needs, by choosing topics from the following areas :
The most effective professional development is often found within schools. There are few schools that do not have excellent practitioners. However, it can feel really daunting standing up in front of others as the 'expert'. People expect a lot when they go on a course, and a 'run of the mill' training puts people to sleep or fails to energise trainees so desired changes don’t happen.
This course is for those who want to learn how to engage, enliven, inspire and motivate those they present to, giving them simple usable skills and a suite of possible activities for their own workshops.
Participants will :
Effective learning rarely happens by chance. Teachers must use a number of skills from their considerable learning armoury. These include: planning, recording, challenging, demonstrating, securing, managing, adapting, explaining, discussing, interrogating, reviewing, evaluating, modifying, establishing and questioning. They cannot do that without planning.
This workshop uses a basic lesson planning model and gives teachers practical ideas for devising interesting, effective lessons. This workshop can be extended to include whole and half-day sessions for specific departments on planning a series of lessons using active learning approaches and available resources, and paired observation of lessons in action with coaching and feedback.
Participants will :
When evaluating lessons there are a number of variables that need to be considered: the purpose of the observation, the intended audience for feedback, time available and the relationship between the observer and the teacher. Does one focus on a particular aspect or observe all aspects of the lesson? What makes some lessons more effective than others? Are all taught in this workshop.
Participants will :
Disaffection is often a rational response on the part of students to particular conditions in classrooms rather than simply a general disposition to deviate from acceptable norms of behaviour. This workshop will give teachers a ‘toolkit’ to help student disaffection in their classroom.
Participants will :
Effective teaching is edifying teaching, and people are more likely to be edified when they participate in learning. Asking good questions and directing effective discussions are primary ways to encourage that participation. This workshop provides training for teachers in facilitating thinking through questioning.
In this program the participants will :
This workshop fits very neatly with ‘Teaching Beyond the Textbook: problem solving and enquiry-based learning.’ As teachers, we are primarily concerned with providing a precise and often limited body of knowledge. How much time do we spend teaching students the skills they will need to access information to cement their own understanding or follow up on areas of interest? This workshop will demonstrate how independent learning can be part of every classroom.
In this workshop the candidates will :
This workshop will demonstrate how to turn textbook information into a problem-solving activity incorporating teamwork, independent learning and opportunities for assessment at all levels. For schools that are very keen to embed the culture of Enterprise and Active Learning, we can offer a practical session involving 50 - 80 students linking a number of cross-curricular areas including the environment, performing arts, health education, business development and cultural awareness. These sessions can be a half or full day workshop, depending on need and age of students. Suitable for Grades 7 - 11 and all curricula.
In the workshop the participants will :
This workshop is designed to help schools understand why parental contact is so important and how systems can assess the quality and effectiveness of current practice. We will conduct a parent information session lasting between 1 – 1 ½ hours following the workshop where we will explain to parents the importance of on-going communication with the school and how to ensure they use opportunities provided to maximise their child’s enjoyment and achievement.
In the training the participants will :
The bell goes and students wait to start the lesson. On average, there is an 8 minute gap between the end of one lesson and the actual start of the following lesson, whether staff move and students remain in the same room or vice versa (observed during visits across a wide variety of schools). This workshop will demonstrate how to eliminate ‘wasted’ time at the beginning of each lesson.
During the workshop the participants will :
Using groups to help engage and involve students in their learning is an essential part of active learning. Unless specifically planned, it can also present opportunities for students to be off task and allow one or two people to do the work while the others are there in body only. This workshop will demonstrate how to gain the most from group work while eliminating the possible negative effects.
During the training the participants will :
This whole-staff training demonstrates how taking learning out of the text book is an effective and necessary part of today’s education. The challenge utilises experiential learning as a professional development tool for improving teaching and learning.
Both teaching and support staff are divided into equal teams allowing for different talents and areas of expertise. Each team receives a remit for the challenge based on a topic related to UAE life and culture. The remit sets out a number of compulsory and optional tasks the team must complete. The team can organize themselves in any way they wish to complete the tasks, however a number of visits are made to each group and points are awarded for teamwork and leadership.
In the workshop of two consecutive days, the participants will:
We also offer a half day workshop on how to run the Step Ahead Challenge with your students as a tool to develop independent learning and problem solving skills.
