Effective educational leadership makes the most significant difference in improving learning and successful student outcomes. This may be direct or indirect leadership and be exercised in a number of ways. Results from schools prove that effective assessment and instruction make the greatest difference to school improvement. There is a wealth of research on which instructional strategies make the biggest difference in student achievement. It is so tempting to choose assessment methods that are “easy to grade,” but best practice tells us that we should choose those methods that best enable us to see if students have a deep understanding of the essential questions.

Meanwhile, data from assessment can be a powerful tool to raise individual student achievement, individual teacher, whole department and whole school performance. This whole-staff training demonstrates how taking learning out of the text book is an effective and necessary part of today’s education. The challenge utilises experiential learning as a professional development tool for improving teaching and learning.

Both teaching and support staff are divided into equal teams allowing for different talents and areas of expertise. Each team receives a remit for the challenge based on a topic related to UAE life and culture. The remit sets out a number of compulsory and optional tasks the team must complete.
