The Shakuhachi is Japan's traditional vertically held bamboo flute. At first the Shakuhachi was used for meditation by the Samurai and Clergy class of Japanese society. During the Edo period in Japan it became an essential part of Japanese ensemble music accompaniment to the Koto and Shamisen. The three major genre of Shakuhachi music taught today are: Honkyoku (the traditional original "archaic" compositions for Shakuhachi meditation), Sankyoku (the traditional accompaniment to Koto and Shamisen songs of the Edo era), Gendai Kyoku (modern compositions for Shakuhachi.) Kyle Chmei Helou is a Shakuhachi player, teacher, performer, and maker who lived and studied this art in Japan. He is a recipient of the Shihan master license from the Chikumeisha Shakuhachi Guild while also an accomplished player of the Watazumido repertoire under the Sogawa Lineage. He teaches online to the global community and now gives in-person Shakuhachi lessons here in Arjan, Dubai. Lessons are one-on-one and usually last about an hour.
